Playful Packages

Do you love the little packages that tea or chocolate sometimes come in? Those cute little cardboard containers with flaps and interesting closures?

As a graphic designer, our circle leader Angie Delaplain loves the design choices that go into creating beautiful packaging, and has a container (or so) full of packages to repurpose! She enjoys decorating them, and filling with little affirmation cards, trinkets, perhaps chocolate and a twist of Red Thread.

For our first March circle, Angie shared ideas for altering some of our own container collections!

Fair Trade Madagascar chocolate folder

After our red thread circle, we brought out our containers and opened them to lay flat, then applied a layer of gesso on the outer surface - A hairdryer speeds up the process!  A container you enjoy can be used as a template for creating duplicate containers.

Next we painted the surface using acrylic paint and Mod Podge, then adesign that fit our intention. (I add glitter to mine, for sparkle without the mess!) Mixing a bit of Mod Podge with the paint makes a smooth, silky surface that I enjoy. Using pretty paper, quotes, bits of artwork on paper in collage is another option.

Some gals folded origami boxes out of scrap, mixed media or watercolor paper, and used watercolors or other media. To decorate their boxes.

I used the packaging from a bar of Madagascar fair trade chocolate, (mmm) which I'd already tucked some of my Neuro-doodle gratitude cards into. Love this colorful alteration!

Card container

Creating containers was the first of a two-part series - in our next session, we'll create cards to go inside these little packages!

The circle links are on our Events page.

Happy Paint Party Friday

Word of the Year

For Several years, my friend Kathleen has offered a Word of the Year Playshop at our church in January. In 2023 my  word was Weave , and in 2024, Balance (Kauliki)  Kathleen generally offers a more linear approach - using Dictionaries and Thesauri, after a quick review and release of any 'baggage' from the year just past, and then we decorated an Arrow .... This year , she invited a friend who facilitates SoulCollage (tm) to join us, and we chose images! Both Kathleen and Deandra brought a bunch of images from magazines, cards and calendars, and laid them out on several tables,  for us to gather from.  Card size is general 5×7" or 5x8" and we could choose from several colours of mat board for our background . Other materials included an index card, glue sticks and scissors.  My workstation We did a quick year review and release, then choose images, and started to fine tune and arrange them. After we'd glued the images, we paired up, and one of the dyad a...

I've got a Plan!

Last April, after the start of our  Artist in Residence time , Shiloh Sophia and her own business coach Amy Ahlers offered a creativity based business class called Dancing Entrepreneur. While most gals were from our creative community, several other creatives joined us. Posts which really caught my eye were of  Karen Dawn 's Visual Planning system , and I joined her Beta Test group on crafting similar systems of our own! I love Karen's creative approach to planning! (Her  blog  includes some of these teachings! She also introduced me to Neurographica!) Vision Plan Board My visual planner is on a foam board left over from a vision board class, and holds my Medicine Basket, one of the Dancing Entrepreneur action cards, a couple of Neuro-Noodles plus - pockets. Who doesn't love these little pockets? The clothesline is a ribbon, and I simply taped the ends to the back of the board using painter's tape! You can use nails or eye hooks to tack the lines directly on a wall -...

Soul Compass Cards

One of my favorite Intentional Creativity®practices is creating cards!   Creating a set of Soulful Story Cards was the first Red Thread event I offered, and we often create several cards in a circle. I've written about several ways to use our cards, and there are so many ways to create them!  Materials:  Watercolor or mixed media paper, thin cardboard (I use watercolor and mixed media paper from pads)  Watercolours or acrylic paint, acrylic ink, shimmer watercolors, Neocolor 2 crayons, Inktense pencils, calligraphy or micon pens, brushes Scissors, edge trimmers Items for collage, gold paint, glue or medium Set your intention for your cards Paint your background - playful, happy colors! If using watercolor paper, spray and drip color into it for a wash. If recycling thin cardboard (chocolate sleeves or tea boxes)  use white paint or gesso to prepare your surface, then paint with acrylics. While your paint dries, write out the 'old stories' that hold yo...
